Inspired by the class visit from Noah Scalin.
I really enjoyed having Noah Scalin join our class last week! His skull-a-day project is very inspiring. Here are a few skulls I made with wint-o-green Life Savers candy. The eyes ad mouth are red gummie Life Savers candy.
Yeti was very curious about the Life Savers but didn’t care for the way the pep-o-mint Life Savers smelled.
More Life Savers gummie photography… this time I aimed a bright light at the camera to illuminate the Life Savers gummie I was holding in front of the lens. I didn’t use a flash, just the light from my task lamp aimed towards the lens and the gummie.
I shot an uppercase letter-pressed alphabet, once with a red LS gummie frame and once with a green LS gummie frame.
I think the red LS gummies produce a nice soft framed area, whereas the green gummies produce a bluish white ring in most of my photos.
I made a Life Saver cocktail, garnished with a gummie Life Saver and crushed classic Life Savers on the rim of the glass.
Recipe 1
1 part grenadine
5 parts sprite
splash cranberry juice
Recipe 2
3 parts Vodka
1 part St-Germain elderflower liqueur
splash of Pomegranate juice
This was shocking to me because I think of Life Savers as being the “all-American” candy. I think it’s sad that a county (and it’s school system!) lost it’s 3rd largest tax-payer because sugar is cheaper in Canada. I understand that companies need to make profit in order to survive. However, I think it’s sad for the families who have loyally served the company for over 20 years. Sigh…
Life Savers flavor is strong! I was actually trying to build a house with woodless colored pencils and Life Savers gummies. After several attempts, I realized all I could make was a barbell and a train crossing post. (The train crossing post wouldn’t stand up long enough for a photograph.)
I think it’s very important for businesses to encourage their employees to volunteer. Giving them paid work time to volunteer seems like a win-win situation to me. In this image, you can see how much of an impact just 600 employees could make! If I have a choice, I definitely prefer to patronize businesses that give back to society and especially those that allow for paid volunteer service hours. I couldn’t find any information on Life Savers corporate volunteer policy, but I did find that they employed almost 600 people in Holland, Michigan before moving their plant to Canada.
Although it’s painfully obvious, Life Savers for Life Savers could be a volunteer campaign name.
Life Savers gummie candies make great flash filters! I think a Life Savers camera would be a lot of fun. A gummie holder in front of the flash and in front of the lens would be perfect. The outside of the camera could look like a box of Life Savers gummies.
Here are a few more gummie camera photos I’ve taken:

This is a watermelon-bellied unicorn. The watermelon juice comes from the utters of the watermelon-bellied unicorn. (I painted this with watercolor.)
Here is one of my original sketches of the idea:
Here is another watermelon-bellied unicorn I painted:
Where did you think watermelon-flavored Life Savers came from??
Gummie Flash. I’ve been experimenting with different photography techniques while photographing Life Savers. I used the Life Savers gummies as flash filters and as a type of framing device for my photos. In this photo from my apartment, the left picture was taken while holding a red Life Saver gummie to the lens; the right picture was taken while holding a red Life Saver gummie in front of the flash. I haven’t quite gotten the hang of it, but I think it looks really interesting. I’ll definitely try this again to see what happens. (Framed print “Miss Futura” by inkfingerSutter.)
